Abdal

When Lifeways service user Kevin joined his friend Abdal and their support team on a four-day trip to Blackpool, there was plenty of fun and laughter all round. Both Kevin and Abdal are unable to communicate verbally, but this hasn’t stopped them enjoying many new challenges – including horse riding, ten-pin bowling and swimming.

Kevin, who is 22, has a genetic disorder called Angelman’s Syndrome and Abdal, 20, has autism and severe learning disabilities. They receive 24 hour care from Lifeways at their home in Nelson, Lancashire.

Team Leader Malcolm Hembrough says he has seen them both progress significantly since moving into their own home: “When they came, they both had challenging behaviour and this has improved immensely. They have really settled into their environment and are very relaxed, with lots of choice in their lives.

“Their trip to Blackpool was a totally new experience that they really enjoyed together. They did nothing but smile and laugh for the holiday. It was tremendous.”

Kevin’s mother Margaret added: “The Lifeways staff are really nice. When Kevin lived at home, he went to a day centre but now he goes out on day trips and holidays. He’s a lot more independent, he’s with people his own age and he’s really very happy.”
