NigelAfter Lifeways service user Nigel moved into his new home in Burnley, his care team worked closely with him to find some great activities in the community for him to enjoy.

Through the local Job Centre, they discovered that the Prince’s Trust – whose patron is the Prince of Wales – was holding a 12-week Team Programme course locally, offering a variety of training sessions in skills such as first aid and food hygiene. He was also invited to visit a local fire station to learn about fire-fighting and enjoyed a trip around the Manchester United Football stadium. One of the highlights was a week-long residential course, where he swung down a zip slide and learned how to canoe.

After his action-packed adventures, Nigel, who has moderate learning difficulties, said: “I really enjoyed it and made two really good friends. I would love to do it again.”

Lifeways Team Leader, Jackie Barker, explained that Nigel still talks about his experiences on the Prince’s Trust course: “It was really important because it gave him something to focus on. Afterwards he had a great sense of achievement and it has made him feel a valued part of society.”
