Lifeways Community Care provides a range of services to support adults with learning disabilities, either by offering Supported Living services in their own home or by providing Residential Care.
Our aim is to encourage each person to play to their strengths, encouraging success and developing strategies for coping with particular difficulties. Our Individual Support Services are tailored to meet each person’s needs and requirements.
What is a learning disability?
The term ‘learning disability’ is used to describe an ‘overall impairment of intellect or function’ and ranges from a profound to a mild level of disability.
The way that a learning disability impacts on a person’s life will vary, depending on its severity and on the person’s life circumstances. People with a profound level of learning disability are likely to need significant, daily support with most aspects of daily living eg. personal care, communication, and mobility. People with a mild to moderate learning disability may merely need low level, intermittent support with learning and remembering new things.
A learning disability cannot be ‘cured’, but with the right help and support any person with a learning disability can lead an active and fulfilling life alongside their fellow citizens in the community.
Additional support
Many people we support also have associated problems, such as sensory impairment, physical disabilities or mental health needs, and Lifeways is skilled at providing support for people with particularly complex or challenging behaviour, such as those with emotional and social difficulties that may arise through, for example, having an Autistic Spectrum Disorder.
Our health action plans ensure that the health care needs of the people we support are met effectively. This includes helping them to access mainstream health services and overcoming communication barriers.
