Loch Park Rural skills programme
You can attend Loch Park one to five days a week and do something different every day. Our rural skills programme concentrates on safety at work, through practical workshops. The centre not only gives people a place to develop their skills but also a sense of accomplishment and pride in their work. We have woodwork workshops teaching people we support to make wooden items such as bird boxes, garden benches and Christmas decorations.
There is a large garden with poly tunnels, raised beds and fruit trees. Here the people we support grow vegetables and fruit, which are used to make soups and jams and sold to local businesses. The centre also has a kindler machine and log splitter. These are used to process wood, which we sell to the local community.
We also plant trees, look after chickens, run cooking classes and do arts and crafts. During the warmer weather we use the Loch for activities such as rowing or canoeing. We also organise days out to the golf range, bowling, sea life centre, Huntly Castle and crab fishing. There are regular forum meetings to enable the people we support to be involved in the running of the centre.
Loch Park is a big part of the local community; we sell items we produce/make to the local shops. We have put on a music festival for the past 5 years. Which local businesses take part in and the community attends. Loch Park also boasts a rehabilitation hospital for damaged trees. To which the local community bring in damaged branches to be rehabilitated and replanted. Loch Park are replanting the estate with saplings, to offset their carbon foot print. This project will also help keep the landscape of the valley as it has always been.
What Loch Park does appeals not only to the people we support but also to those who care for them. All achievements and goals are recorded and celebrated. Loch Park also promotes a strong work ethic amongst those we support and a greater understanding of the environment.
