Heron Court, a purpose-built supported living service for up to 24 adults with autism and learning disabilities, will open this spring in Leith, Edinburgh.

The service will be run by Living Ambitions, which is part of the Lifeways Group, the UK’s largest team of support professionals providing support for adults in the community.

Located just over a mile from Edinburgh City Centre, Heron Court is made up of 24 self-contained one-bedroom apartments, designed from the ground up to give each individual a high degree of independence.

All apartments are made up of an open-plan kitchen and living area, bedroom and bathroom with level-access shower. Heron Court also has an accessible garden for each individual to enjoy.

Each individual will receive support from Lifeways’ Support Team, who will be at Heron Court 24 hours a day.

Heron Court aims to provide individuals with easy access to the community. Three supermarkets are in easy reach, and the nearest bus stop is just a five-minute walk away, with buses every half-hour to Edinburgh’s restaurants, pubs, tourist attractions and festivals.

Even closer to the service is Leith’s Pitt Market, known for its street food and live music.

April opening

Heron Court is being delivered by Lifeways in partnership with Edinburgh City Council, Inclusion Housing, and specialist supported living developer HB Villages.

Construction on Heron Court is set to complete in March. The first individuals are expected to arrive in April.

Heron Court will be led by Senior Service Manager Susan Green.

“Heron Court is needed because not all accommodation settings in the community meet the needs of individuals for both independence and security,” said Susan.

“I am excited to be involved in this new project, to be part of the challenges that lie ahead, not only for my team but the individuals who will hold their own tenancies.

“It’s great being part of a team that will enable individuals to live as  independent and inclusive a life as possible and support them to reach their potential.”
