‘Our whole family can’t thank everyone enough!’ Mark’s reablement story
After an in-patient stay in a Gateshead hospital, Mark was experiencing a decline in his independent living skills.
Mark, who’s in his fifties, was discharged from hospital and temporarily moved to Abbeymoor, a Lifeways residential service in Newcastle.
At Abbeymoor, the team worked with Mark to create support plans which focused on his physical and mental recovery, and also his personal goals, including:
- social skills
- personal care
- getting out and about
- developing skills to support Mark to add structure and purpose to his days.
Mark was supported at Abbeymoor over a period of one-and-a-half months. He then went home to live with his family – who are delighted at Mark’s independence skills.
‘Very supportive’
“Our whole family can’t thank everyone enough,” said Julie, Mark’s sister.
“The team were very welcoming to Mark, which put him at ease.”
“All the support team were very professional, caring, and understanding, and also very supportive of us, his family,” Julie added.
“My brother came home within weeks, and we honestly believe without the care and support he received, this may not have been the case.”
Approach of empathy
Louise Watson, Abbeymoor’s Registered Manager, said that her team’s approach was key to support Mark.
“The team at Abbeymoor have a wealth of experience and great deal of compassion,” said Louise.
“Working with Mark during his short reablement placement, our approach of empathy and unconditional positive regard were the core components of our support.”
